The tourism is apparently not doing enough to meet the needs of disabled travellers, according to a newly released report.
In revealed findings, it points out that travel destinations and services are not well equipped to deal with elderly and disabled holidaymakers.
Hotels are said to have limited adapted accessible rooms available and particular countries such as Morroco and Mexico do not have the foundations to transport people from the airport, or equipment hire.
Furthermore, the industry is not making enough of an effort to make these changes.
The study, by Dimitrios Buhalis, Bournemouth University Tourism Expert and Deputy Director of the university’s International Centre of Tourism and Hospitality Research, highlighted that disabled travel is one of the biggest challenges facing the holiday industry.
He says that of the 650 million people plus world-wide with disabilities, this poses a considerable challenge for global tourism.
Mr Buhalis said: “The industry must take a more proactive approach to ensure that infrastructure and services are more accessible.”
